Surah Al-Falaq — Allah Protects Us From Seen and Unseen Harm

Assalamu Alaikum, my bright students! ✨

Today we are studying Surah Al-Falaq, a short Surah with a very powerful message. It teaches us how to ask Allah for protection from harms we can see and harms we cannot see.

The Surah begins:

“Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak.”

This first ayah teaches us that Allah is our refuge. A refuge is a safe place. When we are afraid, worried, confused, or hurt, we turn to Allah first. Allah is called the Lord of the daybreak because He is the One who brings light after darkness. This reminds us that no darkness is stronger than Allah’s light.

Ruqyah — Protection Through the Words of Allah

According to Tafsir Ibn Kathir, Surah Al-Falaq is connected to protection, Ruqyah, and seeking safety through the words of Allah. Ruqyah means reciting Qur’an and authentic duas for healing and protection. It is not magic, superstition, or pretending. Ruqyah is worship because we are asking Allah alone for help.

Four Kinds of Harm We Seek Protection From

1. The harm of what Allah created

Allah created many things, and most of them benefit us. But sometimes, a created thing can harm us. We ask Allah to protect us from any harm in His creation.

2. The darkness when it settles

Night itself is not bad. Allah created night for rest. But some dangers can happen in darkness, and sometimes darkness can make people feel afraid. We ask Allah to protect us at all times.

3. Harmful secret actions

The Surah mentions those who blow on knots. Classical scholars explain that this refers to harmful magic and hidden evil actions. Muslims do not practice magic. We stay far from it and ask Allah alone for protection.

4. The envier when he envies

Envy, or hasad, is when someone dislikes the good that Allah gave another person and wishes it would go away. This is a sickness of the heart. We ask Allah to protect us from people’s envy, and we also ask Allah to clean our own hearts from jealousy.

The Evil Eye — Balanced Belief

The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, taught that the evil eye is real. But he also taught us the cure: remember Allah, recite Qur’an, make dua, and trust Allah.

We should not become scared or suspicious of everyone. A Muslim is balanced. We believe in what the Prophet taught, but we do not panic. We put our trust in Allah.

A beautiful lesson from the Prophet’s advice to Ibn Abbas is:
“Be mindful of Allah, and He will protect you.”

This means if we remember Allah, obey Him, and try to do what is right, Allah will protect us in the best way.
